Back on planet Earth, in 2020, more precisely on May 27. France is probing the new pace of phase 1 of the unlocking. The coronavirus pandemic, with its tragic procession of deaths and the economic crisis that has already hit numerous people, is making History, everyone is aware of it. It raises a lot of questions which have so far met few successful answers and brings up much hope that this planetary shock will allow our societies to become more resilient and kindhearted, and to correct flaws and excesses
which have been identified and denounced for a long time.

Interrogating the future and enabling and connecting different ways of thinking is the method and the know-how of the Robomobile Life Future Workshop 1 , launched by the DGITM 2 and the CGDD 3 in December 2016. Its field of study is the future of societies in the era of ubiquitous robotized mobility, which we call “robomobile life”. The Workshop’s activities are organized around theme-based seminars, a research program and Grand Annual Rendezvous which bring the community together around a specific theme. “The Robomobile Life” letter maintains the link between members and supporters of the community on a regular basis.

The current work is in line with the Grand Annual Rendezvous of June 2019, whose objective was to approach questions relating to robomobile life on a global scale. Honored by the presence of distinguished French and international experts, this Grand Rendezvous abounded in unexpected and substantiated perspectives, debates on the possible contributions of intelligent mobility to sustainable development, and questions about ethical, freedom, and security issues.

Convinced – with a hint of presumption for which the reader will forgive us – that some elements from that Rendezvous deserved to be more widely shared, we agreed on the value of publishing an Atlas of robomobility, because an atlas displays without judging, offers food for thought, and builds living spaces as much as it bears on them. But what kind of atlas? We suggested to the Atelier an atlas based on our representations of societal impacts in order to describe and begin to structure the space
of robomobile fantasies.

Thus, the Atelier expresses itself within its field of expertise and contributes to public debate alongside scientific, technological, legal, economic and social viewpoints.

We would like here to warmly thank and with our greatest gratitude, all the authors who valiantly took off to explore robomobile fantasies. Their journeys are now ours.

As for you, the reader of this atlas, we thank you for your availability and your attention. We hope that you have found pleasure and value in traveling through these stories and that each of them will find a quiet place in your imaginary universe.

Retour sur la planète Terre, en 2020, et plus précisément le 27 mai. La France explore le nouveau rythme de la phase 1 du déconfinement. La pandémie du coronavirus, avec son dramatique cortège de décès et la crise économique qui est déjà là pour beaucoup de personnes, est en train de marquer l’Histoire, chacun le pressent. Elle soulève beaucoup de questions avec pour le moment peu de réponses abouties et génère beaucoup d’espoirs que ce choc planétaire permette à nos sociétés de gagner en résilience, en humanité, et de corriger défauts et excès - pourtant constatés et dénoncés de longue date.

Interroger l’avenir, ouvrir et connecter différents modes de penser, c’est la méthode et le savoir-faire de l’Atelier Prospectif la Vie Robomobile 1 , lancé par la DGITM 2 et le CGDD 3 , en décembre 2016. Son champ de questionnement, c’est l’avenir des sociétés à l’ère de la généralisation des mobilités intelligentes et robotisées, ce que nous dénommons « la vie robomobile ». Les activités de l’Atelier s’organisent autour de séminaires thématiques, d’un programme de recherches et de Grands Rendez-Vous Annuels
qui réunissent la communauté autour d’une thématique spécifique. La lettre « La Vie Robomobile » maintient le lien entre les membres et les sympathisants de la communauté à intervalles réguliers.

Le présent ouvrage s’inscrit dans le droit fil du Grand Rendez-Vous Annuel de juin 2019. Son objectif était d’échanger à l’échelle internationale sur les questions relatives à la vie robomobile. Honoré par la présence d’éminents experts français et internationaux, ce Grand Rendez-Vous fut riche de mises en perspectives inattendues et étayées, de débats sur les apports possibles de la mobilité intelligente au développement durable, sur les questions éthiques, de liberté, de sécurité.

Persuadés, avec un zeste de présomption dont le lecteur voudra bien nous pardonner, qu’il y avait là des éléments à partager largement, nous sommes tombés d’accord sur l’intérêt d’éditer un Atlas de la robomobilité, parce qu’un atlas expose sans juger, donne matière à réflexion, construit autant qu’il s’appuie sur les espaces de vie. Mais quel atlas ? Nous avons proposé à l’Atelier un atlas s’appuyant sur nos représentations des impacts sociétaux pour décrire et commencer à structurer l’espace des imaginaires robomobiles.

Ainsi, l’Atelier s’exprime dans son champ de compétences et contribue au débat public au côté des approches scientifiques, technologiques, juridiques, économiques, sociales.

Nous tenons ici à remercier chaleureusement et avec beaucoup de gratitude, tous les auteurs qui sont vaillamment partis explorer les imaginaires robomobiles. Leurs voyages sont dorénavant les nôtres.
